Delicious cocktails, hanging kebabs, live music and a stunning interior … Sounded like the perfect place to take our Belgian friends out for dinner. They visited us for a weekend, and it seemed only fair to show them some of Coventry’s finest dining and dancing venues.

The Botanist was the first on our to-show-the-Belgians list. After class, we went straight home, got ready and headed to Coventry’s city centre, where The Botanist is located. The ladies started the evening with cocktails and the boys with beers.

Hanging kebabs™ + wine = success

The Botanist hanging kebabs variety

Being famous for its hanging kebabs, I decided to try five-spice duck version. Although it was a tad too try for my taste, I like my meat very red, the hoisin sauce (and cocktails) totally made up for it. Of course, we couldn’t resist a bottle of red wine to accompany our meal.

A never-ending drinks menu

Josefien, one of my roomies, and I went there before. We were amazed by the greenery and little bridges, leading us over an indoor stream and to all kinds of quirky seating areas. The drinks menu was as amazing, able to satisfy everyone’s alcoholic and non-alcoholic taste. One of The Botanist’s most famous creations is the Raspberry Disaronno Sour, which is served in a plant pot and a surrounded with a lot of smoke.

Reality

Unfortunately, The Botanist won’t fit in your everyday student budget (unless you’re rich). However, it’s a great place to take your (international) friends on a special occasion. Or just get your parents to take you there!

Post-corona visits

If you’re planning to go for dinner at The Botanist when it’s safe again, be sure to book a table. It’s a well-known restaurant in Coventry and always fully booked during the weekends. Luckily, they have provided some entertainment during this crisis. Want to master the arts of cocktail-making? Head over to their Instagram!
